“After having my kid 3 years ago I developed horrible back pain; the kind where you can’t walk because you are stuck in a hunched-over position. With the help of the Tangelo team, I am happy to say I am living most days with little to no pain. I am running after my daughter. I am picking her up and dancing with her.If you want to get back to life, I highly recommend giving Tangelo a call!”
At Tangelo, we don’t just look at your back when we are treating you for lower back pain – we work with you to find the pain source. We’ll take you through an extensive assessment to look at your body mechanics and to make sure that once you get out of pain, you stay out of pain. From your assessment, we’ll create a customized plan for you that involves a blend of advanced chiropractic care, manual therapy and progressive, functional rehabilitation.
Our team of chiropractors, sports medicine doctors, and rehab therapist will look for movement dysfunction and weakness in the hips, core, and mid-back to see what contributed to the condition. After looking at all these factors, we devise a treatment plan to get you on the path to recovery. Our doctors address the injury through manual therapy techniques to reduce inflammation and improve freedom of motion. This provides a window of opportunity for our Rehab Specialists to restore balance of strength and improve movement dysfunctions through functional exercise. Coupled together, you’ll have a plan to get out of pain fast, and back to doing what you love. Moreover, you’ll leave with all the tools you need to stay healthy for a lifetime.

Back pain, whether lower, upper or middle is extremely common. Symptoms can include weakness, tightness, and stiffness, shooting pain or tingling, burning, and numbness. People may experience difficulty standing or sitting for long periods of time.
Sleeping may become uncomfortable, and many people who suffer from low back pain also experience stiffness and soreness in their back upon waking in the morning. Often physical activity is dramatically limited, or it causes the symptoms to increase following the activity. Gentle movements can feel good but are often followed by a return of discomfort thereafter.
These are just some of the common conditions associated with lower-back pain that we help treat at our Portland -Slabtown clinic.
Lower back pain can be caused by many factors, including posture, muscle imbalances, degeneration, weakness, poor movement, athletic injuries, and other trauma. Generally speaking, poor bracing strategies are the root cause of pain. Intrinsic core stabilizer muscles are often underutilized, glutes are inhibited, and mobility of the hips and thoracic spine are limited. Collectively, these lead to compensations and inefficient movement patterns that cause discomfort.
Low-back pain can be categorized into two types: acute and chronic. In either case, the lumbar spine and surround structures overwork while more powerful stabilizers remain inhibited.
Acute back pain is usually caused by a mechanism of injury, e.g. a car crash, or picking up a load incorrectly and overstressing the tissues or skeletal structures of the lumbar spine. As part of the body’s self-protection response, inflammation and movement compensations typically follow to protect the site of injury, which often leads to tightness and pain that restricts movement and limits physical activity.
Chronic back pain can stem from an acute injury that goes untreated, and can develop and worsen over time. Often muscle imbalances and poor movement patterns are the underlying cause of dysfunction, both of which overstress the lower back and cause stiffness on a regular basis.
