How Chiropractic Care Helps Alleviate Joint PainWhen we think about chiropractic, most of us immediately think of lower back and neck pain. However, chiropractic adjustments can also be therapeutic in treating joint pain and other associated disorders.

In this blog, we will discuss:

• What is a chiropractic adjustment

• How chiropractic can help with joint pain

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

Traced back to ancient Chinese and Greek writing, chiropractic manipulations have been a modality of healing going back as far as 2700 BC.

In 1885, DD Palmer founded chiropractic as a profession and later established the Palmer School of Chiropractic located in Davenport, Iowa.

For 150 years, chiropractic has been the preferred performance and pain relief choice for everyone, from professional athletes to those in their golden years.

Using gentle manipulation and performed only by a licensed practitioner, chiropractic adjustments are designed to reduce pain, alleviate muscle tension and restore joint mobility and function. As an alternative form of treatment, chiropractic is for those who wish to avoid the use of prescription medications.

How Chiropractic Can Help with Joint Pain

Through restoring the alignment of the joint, chiropractic has been shown to reduce nerve pain, improve joint function and reduce stiffness and pain.

While anyone can benefit from chiropractic treatment, people who suffer from joint pain such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis can especially benefit from this form of medicine.

For example, osteoarthritis may be caused by insidious joint stress over time due to improper alignment. This misalignment leads to changes in your movement patterns, compensation, weakness, excessive stress, and damage to the joints as we age. A good example of this is the knees through a common dysfunction called ‘genu valgus” or “knee-knocking”  (see image below)

The valgus collapse of the knees is a mechanical breakdown of movement like standing up out of a chair, squatting, and jogging/running.

While under load, when the knees are driven towards the midline of the body, the upper leg (femur) internally rotates, and the lower leg (tibia) externally rotates. This creates rotational stress on the knee joint and can contribute to mid to severe pain down the line.

Chiropractic, coupled with soft tissue treatment and progressive rehabilitation, synergistically works to alleviate pain, increase joint mobility and restore functional strength keeping you feeling good for the long term.
